One is big endian and the other is little endian. Although it has RAM, the card does not support uploading of sound samples for the synthesizer.

The byte swapping is probably done in hardware to make it easier to transfer 16 bit data between the x86 architecture in a PC and the 68k architecture on the sound card.
Soundscapes based upon this chip had similar capabilities to their retail Soundscape counterparts, which were themselves based upon the Ensoniq ' wavetable ' sample-based synthesis chip pair ' Otto ' and 'Sequoia'. In these operating systems, programs accessed the sound card through its driver, allowing full hardware support without the need for the software developer to support the card directly.

As mentioned above, the host side is far more complex, with several hundred lines of C code compared to a soundsccape of assembly instructions for the firmware. Please discount Roland, GUS, Creative as I have some of these cards -- they are all very good incidentally, I'm not being disrespectful about them.
Sound cards based on this soundscapee were never available at retail. They are good cards, especially the Elite, but they aren't flawless of course. The patch set is revised and has notably stronger percussion samples. The Elite and non-Elite Soundscape full-length cards have much different patch sets.
